Maha’s Diary – ‘Lost East London’

Established in 1884, in the heart of London’s East End, this project marks Oxford House’s 140th anniversary. To celebrate our long and diverse history, we’ve digitised over 300 items to make our archive accessible for the first time and share our story – from ‘settlement house’ to vibrant community arts centre. In 2019 Oxford House underwent a large refurbishment project to restore the Grade II listed building, increasing accessibility and making more arts spaces.

With so many men away during the war, Oxford House focused many of its activities towards women and girls. Throughout the years, Oxford House has remained a thriving community hub for our local area. Post-war, Oxford House would adopt more of a community centre model. In particular, we served as a hub for community activism from the 1970s onwards. The building became home to many protest and campaigning groups ranging from anti-racist activism to pensioner action. The exhibition will also contain a newly commissioned poem reflecting East London’s complex history as a home to many diverse communities, and included a school’s history programme which ran from June.
